walking on Samos - Manolates

Manolates:
There are three roads that lead to Manolates. Two of them follow the small river the "Kakorema" ("bad river") and after a steep climb you reach Manolates. The third one leads you through olives groves and wineyards to Manolates.

Walking from Valeondades to Manolates. possibility A:
Go past the restaurant "ta Aidonia" and turn right onto the concrete road . Turn left and cross over the bridge and shortly afterwards take the path that goes up along an irrigation channel . The path bends to the right and you will see the nightingale valley in its full glory. As far as the eye can see there will be vineyards and many olive trees on the other side of the valley. Stay on this path until you come to a sandy path. There turn to the right towards a little church. From this spot you have a lovely view of the road you have just taken. Go back to where you came from and turn right onto a sandy path. Follow this path and turn right just in front of a house and follow this path next to a wall. Soon afterwards a path from the vineyard joins the path that you’re on, turn left and you will see a sign on which is written "footh-path to Manolates". Follow this twisting path upwards until you reach a concrete road. Then there are 2 possibilities: you can follow this concrete road upwards until you reach the beginning of Manolates, or you can walk 80 meters to your right and turn left onto a concrete road were you will see the sign ”Oundades”. Follow this steep concrete road upwards until you arrive at a crossing in the road where you turn left and find yourself in the centre of the village.

Walking from Valeondades to Manolates. possibility B:
Go down to the concrete road. Turn left. Cross the river after 50 meters where you will find a big rock/boulder. Follow the path through the forest. Often you can hear nightingales singing here in springtime ! The path ends at a sandy road. Turn right. Follow the sandy road . You cross the river four times. In summer and autumn the river becomes a little stream. After the fourth time of crossing look out for a big rock with a pine tree growing on the right. Shortly afterwards you will reach a winding path going upwards. You will find red dots and a stone man at the beginning of the path. It’s a little slippery because of the leaves from the stone oak. As you walk further up you will pass an olive tree yard. This path leads up to a sandy road where you turn left. Follow the road uphill. Look for a big oak tree with a red dot on it after the second bend to the left. Here starts a steep trail that will lead you up in no time. You pass a house with a big red dot on it to the right hand side and climb further up. Again you pass a house with a dot on it and this time on the left hand side. At the end of the trail you meet a sandy road, marked by stone men. Turn right. The road meanders in the direction of the sea. Near a house the sandy road changes into a concrete road. At this point turn left. After 50 metres, turn right onto a footpath ( there is a sign) . You will pass a shed and reach the concrete road, where you turn right. Keep to the left at the crossing in the road. Keep walking along the concrete road. You will pass a cemetery and go up to the right. The end of this road leads into the village.

Walking from Valeondades to Manolates. possibility C:
Walk down from the village, go past the last house on the left and go down to the concrete road opposite restaurant To Palataki. Turn left. After 50 metres, after a big rock, cross the river and follow the path through the forest. Here, you can often hear the nightingales singing ! You will reach a sandy road where you turn right. Keep on following the sandy road. You cross the river four times. In summer and spring the river becomes a little stream. After the fourth crossing look out for a big rock with a pine tree growing on the right. Shortly after that , on your right hand side, a path starts going up to Manolates marked with red dots and stone men ( see possibility B). After about 150 meters from this point, on your left, the climb up towards Vourliotes begins (stone man and blue sign). A hundred metres after this the climb straight to Manolates begins (stone man and red dots and sign M2). Ignore side paths and keep on climbing. Keep walking right up to a T-crossing, turn left and follow the sharp turn to the right. Ignore the road to the left. The landscape opens up and you have a beautiful view of the Nightingale valley. Follow the winding road till you reach a house where the sandy road changes into a concrete road and turn left. After 50 metres you turn right onto a footpath ( with a sign). You will pass a shed and find yourself on the concrete road again where you turn right. Keep on walking to the left at the crossing. Continue walking along the concrete road. When you pass the cemetery you turn up to the right and at the end of the road you will arrive at the village of Manolates.
